Halalbooking guide to halal-friendly holidays in Kent

The historic county of Kent was titled The Garden of England as far back as 400 years ago when Henry VIII once tried some cherries that were grown in Kent, and he liked them so much he decided to give the county a nickname. Even the name of ‘Kent’ exudes an aura of royalty, an enchanting title from a former King.

In the county where history and the future go hand in hand, many innovative ideas proactively take care of the past whilst simultaneously being environmentally conscious to preserve its presence for the future. Kent boasts some amazing ideas for an eco-friendly holiday by making less of a carbon footprint for example, a network of buses so you can get anywhere to reduce pollution from cars. In Islam, the importance of being eco-friendly is stressed. Allah SWT commands us to avoid corruption on earth and to avoid being wasteful, which applies to everything we do. In this case, corruption on earth can be considered as unnecessary pollution. With counties like Kent encouraging environmental sustainability, we should take every opportunity to support this!

Seldom do you find a county that has so much history, royalty, natural beauty, wildlife, organic produce and quaint neighbourhoods to offer in one area. The Garden of England is a gateway for you to explore what you love at a comfortable pace whilst travelling in an environmentally friendly way keeping England's garden forever green.

History of Kent

Kent is home to one of three ‘Royal’ towns in the UK: Royal Tunbridge Wells. In 1909, this town was granted the title of Royal due to its links and strong history with the royal family. Today, Kent keeps up its title of ‘Garden of England’ as it is the proud supplier of the famous Wimbledon strawberries. There are many places around Kent to go strawberry picking such as Lower Ladysden Farm and Winchet Hill and enjoy the renowned fruit in the county as well as stunning views of the landscape in nice sitting areas.

For history lovers, the village of Chiddingstone is the most accurate surviving representation of what a Tudor Village in the county would look like. It is one of Kent’s oldest villages and is home to a beautiful castle and church which are both worth a visit!

Wildlife in Kent

Kent is recognised for its vast amount of woodlands and local wildlife, ideal for any outdoor activities such as walking or cycling. The perfect place for a relaxing getaway and a tranquil escape to the countryside; a family fun activity which all can enjoy. To get the breath of fresh air that is often unavailable in the busy hustle and bustle of everyday life, will change your mindset and make you more grateful of the beautiful views we have all around us.

The Wildwood Trust in Kent is a wildlife park that has over 200 species of animal and are working in conservation programmes to restore and maintain the natural landscapes and species. Visitors will be able to see species such as foxes, bears, wolves, red squirrels and beavers and much more. Each ticket donates 10% to conservation projects and is a breathtaking and ancient experience to see.

What to see and do in Kent

Activities
Enjoy tours of the River Medway and Thames Estuary as you speed past the ancient sights on a jet boat, and get your muscles working whilst you experience the wildlife on a canoe. Be sure to explore the outdoors whilst kayaking, surfing or sailing all available in this wonderful county.

Beaches
The beautiful beaches in Kent are arguably some of the best beaches in the UK. The scenic coastlines will whisk you away and make you feel as if you’re in a different tropical country. Surrounded by water for more than half the county, Kent has a long vast coastline with much to offer. Pick your backdrop depending on whatever your mood is, a picnic on the cliffs or a night by the crashing waves.

The White Cliffs of Dover are one of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in the country. Take a walk amongst the dramatic edges of the clifftops watching the views of the English Channel and the French Coast. All-year round, these cliffs will constantly deliver spectacular views and offer a unique sight that you don’t get to see everyday.

The Thanet Coastline consists of the 16 beaches including Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate. Words cannot do this chalky coastline justice, as it has won various awards for its beautiful landscapes. Not only do they offer ravishing views of the waves crawling to the shore, but there are also activities such as surfing, swimming and sailing. Enjoy the unique experience of rock pools, and walk along the shorelines amongst these beautiful bays.

For those brave enough, cycle along the Viking Coastal Trail on the Thanet Coastline. Covering 32 miles, this coastline takes you back in history to the area where Vikings first arrived in Kent and leaves the ancient world to wonder about on your travels.

Castles
The royal county of Kent would be incomplete without a castle or two. With around 30 castles on offer, you can create your own castle crawl and explore the ancient buildings once full to the brim of knights, lord's servants and entertainers. Today, visitors can go inside the castles rich with history, and revel in the life that once inhabited the area and blossomed 900 years ago. With brilliantly preserved moats and architecture, there is a lot to appreciate it. We recommend visiting the castles of Dover, Rochester, Canterbury and Leeds to name a few.

Although not a castle, we also recommend visiting the Shell Grotto in Margate. Discovered in 1835, the underground passageway is still a complete mystery to the world as to who made it and when. Almost all of the walls and roof are made up of a mosaic of seashells, which numbers around 4-5 million shells - a peculiar experience unlike no other.
